For those of you that don't know, Alexis was my stepdaughter. She was not my legal stepdaughter, but would have been one day when me and her father married. She just didn't have that chance. Before the day God called her to Heaven though, she called me her stepmom and my biological daughters her stepsisters.
Taken from the mouths of my stepdaughters: "Dawn you're like our stepmom, you and daddy have been together for a long time. You help take care of us and we're together all the time. You're not just daddy's girlfriend, you're like our stepmom. We're going to start calling you that. You may not be married but you should be. Anyway you're going to be married one day, hopefully soon." Don't you know that made me cry, but that was some of the happiest tears I've cried in the longest time.
We are a family, not legally not blood-related but in our hearts and that matters more than papers or birth right. Love determines family, not blood nor paper or law. The definition of a stepfamily is a family unit in which one or both adult partners have children from a previous relationship.
